Clear Skin Secrets: How Zinc Supplements Fight Acne

As Deux Skin’s biggest fan, most avid product user, and their nutrition consultant, I, Dr. Alison, am excited to bring you all the details on using zinc to complement acne healing. I was a sufferer of acne for about a year before I decided to make it my mission to figure out why this was happening to my skin.

One of the biggest fighters in the acne game is Zinc. This nutrient doesn’t just support your immune system—it plays a key role in maintaining clear, healthy skin. Its virgo-like multitasking qualities makes this nutrient a go-to when you are dealing with stubborn acne. Let’s explore a little bit of science, shall we?

Zinc Science:

Regulates Oil Production: Zinc keeps your sebaceous glands in check, helping to control the amount of oil your skin produces. It reduces the activity of enzymes that are responsible for oil gland production. Less oil = fewer clogged pores.

Reduces Inflammation: It calms redness and swelling, making blemishes less noticeable and more manageable.

Fights Bacteria: Zinc has antimicrobial properties that target acne-causing bacteria, reducing the likelihood of new breakouts. Propionibacterium acnes, as they are technically termed, are the bacteria that causes acne, so to have zinc combatting this specific bacteria is a game changer.

Speeds Up Healing: From active breakouts to scars, zinc helps your skin repair itself faster.

Supports Collagen Production: This bonus benefit strengthens your skin’s barrier and improves elasticity, which is important for overall skin health.

Zinc-Rich Foods:

Adding zinc to your diet can be a huge benefit to healing your acne. This is something I did early on in my skin healing journey and I found great results! Here are some skin-loving foods you’ll want on your plate:

Oysters: Just a couple can meet your daily zinc needs.

Pumpkin Seeds: Perfect for sprinkling on salads or snacking solo.

Spinach: Your greens = your glow.

Chickpeas: Toss them in a salad or roast for a crunchy treat.

Dark Chocolate: A little bite of dark chocolate can provide the zinc you need!

Eggs: Scrambled, poached, or sunny side up, they’re a zinc-packed delight.

Cashews: Great as a snack or blended into creamy sauces.

Zinc Supplementing:

“Alison, the food thing sounds great, but what if I can’t stay consistent with adding these foods to my diet?” Love this question!! This is where an amazing supplement can be beneficial for you. If you’ve read my blogs or worked with me you know that I am a firm believer of food first, then supplement as necessary. And this is a great instance of when supplementing is appropriate.

The key with Zinc supplements is to ensure you are using a safe and trusted company (buying from Amazon can be tricky… I know I don’t love it either). I highly recommend looking into purchasing from a trusted company, such as Thorne (We love Thorne!) so you know exactly what ingredients are in your supplements and which supplement is going to be absorbed the best (so you’re not wasting your money!)

Your Zinc Healing Game Plan:

Ready to unlock the power of zinc? Here’s a quick recap to keep your skin goals on track:

Incorporate zinc-rich foods into your meals. Think avocado toast with pumpkin seeds or a side of spinach in your eggs.

Consider a supplement if your diet needs a boost, just remember to discuss this with your doctor if you’re already taking medication.

Pair zinc with a solid skincare routine! (That’s where your Deux Skin gals come in!)
