As you might’ve seen on Instagram stories during one of my Day In The Life days, I love a little treat drink. I also am a working, stay at home mama, with a husband that is deployed more than he’s home, so I also have a little (read: a lot) of anxiety. It can make falling asleep a little challenging. That’s when my friend Kyle introduced me to this nighttime drink with Cherry Tart. It was literally delicious, so I did what I do and changed up the recipe a bit to be more Savannah-esque, and also figured out a way to give it to the babies. Here's how it works:
Cherry Tart juice’s positive effect on sleep may be due to tryptophan and melatonin. Melatonin is a sleep hormone secreted at certain times of day to help the body transition to sleep. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that helps the body produce melatonin. (National Institutes of Health (NIH) | Turning Discovery Into Health)
On a chemical level, magnesium aids this process by activating the parasympathetic nervous system, the system responsible for getting you calm and relaxed (6Trusted Source). First, magnesium regulates neurotransmitters, which send signals throughout the nervous system and brain.
It also regulates the hormone melatonin, which guides sleep-wake cycles in your body (7Trusted Source). Second, this mineral binds to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors. GABA is the neurotransmitter responsible for quieting down nerve activity. It is the same neurotransmitter used by sleep drugs like Ambien (8Trusted Source, 9Trusted Source). By helping to quiet the nervous system, magnesium may help prepare your body and mind for sleep.
SLEEPY VAMPIRE LATTE
½ cup Coconut Water
1 Scoop of Thorne Magnesium Bisglycinate
½ cup Cherry Tart
Add the coconut water and the magnesium powder and stir it up. This works best if the coconut water is room temperature, but even if it doesn’t completely dissolve you won’t taste the magnesium. Then, add the cherry tart. I do equal parts coconut water and cherry tart, but it's totally up to you. Drink before bedtime to relax your mind and body and fall asleep super easily.

SLEEPY VAMPIRE GUMMIES
¼ cup Cherry Tart
1 packet of Gelatine
¼ cup Cherry Tart (yes, separate from the first)
Put the first ¼ of cherry tart in a small pot, and pour the gelatine packet on top. Let it sit for a minute to “bloom” aka just get a little thicker, then heat the mixture on low/medium heat for a few. Add in the second ¼ cup of the cherry tart. Remove from the heat and pour into molds. (I like to put the mold container in a 13x9 pan to avoid any messes in case the pouring gets a little crazy.) Refrigerate for ~1 hour and serve!
