Why Vitamin C Is Actually Replaceable

For years now, Vitamin C has been marketed as the end-all-be-all for your skin's health. And don't get me wrong- it's a fabulous ingredient. But it's really expensive to source and formulate due to the natural oxidation process that occurs, and the cheaper ones tend to cause more skin issues- number one being blackheads. Aside from that, some people's skin can't tolerate Vitamin C, due to sensitivities. So, if your skin or your budget isn't a fan of a medical-grade Vitamin C serum, what's a girl to do?

Let's start with the reason Vitamin C is so popular. It's an antioxidant, and antioxidants neutralize free radicals. Free radicals damage cells, affecting DNA and eventually causing mutations, some of which lead to skin cancer. They are redued the apperance of fine lines and wrinkles, lift hyperpigmentation, and stimulate collagen production- something thats been on the decline since your 25th birthday. Not only is it important to eat antioxidants, but also to apply them topically so your skin can drink the antiaging health cocktail, too.

The thing is, there are tons of options to choose from when it comes to antioxidants in skincare. CBD is actually the most powerful antioxidant and isn't as irritating as Vitamin C. Retinol (Vitamin A), known as the anti-aging holy grail, is also an antioxidant! Other skincare ingredients under the antioxidant umbrella include: epicatechin, found in green tea; curcumin, a compound found in turmeric; Vitamin E; Selenium; Zinc; Copper; Carotenoids like Beta Carotene, Lutein, and Lycopene... Just to name a few!

So, if a medical grade Vitamin C serum isn't in the budget, there's no need to opt for the drug store model. Try a different version of antioxidants. Here at Deux, we personally love the Pigment Skin Brightener, the CBD Mist, and/or the Retinol Rejuvenation Serum. All are nonirritating, apply smoother, and are far less money per ounce when directly compared to other popular Vitamin C serums.

Whatever you choose, make sure that you have at least one serum, toner, or moisturizer filled with antioxidants, so your skin gets all the benefits. Also, fun drinking game- take shot every time I say "antioxidants". ;)
